It’s easy to get lost in the world of Bullet Journal stationery, that’s why I asked experienced BuJo enthusiasts what supplies are tested by time and are on their top list.

I’m always looking for new cool supplies and wonder what other people are using. 

Especially because everyone has such a unique and different style, chances are either they use some supplies you have never heard about, or they can be a great inspo for new ways to use your favorite supplies.

Therefore I talked to tons of BuJo gurus and my favorite accounts to learn what some of their favorite stationery are.

I made sure that everyone below has different styles and does different things in their Bullet Journals.

Hayley @hayleyremdeart

Hayley is a master of paints – watercolor, gouache – she uses it all and rocks it.

I also love how she uses different types of paper on her Bullet Journal spreads – white, black, kraft – you can find inspo for all of these.

“My go-to supplies are:

Slav @seed_successful_you

Slav creates just the most wonderful spreads, she uses so many colors, and her decorations are always so very cute.

Her pages always look bright, light, and very positive. Something that would bring a smile to your face.

Here are the supplies she uses to create that wonderful feeling in her BuJo:

“I love using Tombow Fudenosuke brush pens in my bullet journal because they are so classic. You can write calligraphy with them, doodles, etc.

I also love to use Zebra Mildliners. They make my journal look clean, simple, and elegant. They are also great for creating bullet journal headers.”

Mark @menwhobullet

Mark is a unicorn in the Bullet Journal world – a man who uses and totally nails this Bullet Journal thing.

He is very productive with his journal and I love how functional his style is.

He also has been Bullet Journaling for a very long time so he has tons of ideas and tips to share on his Instagram and YouTube channel.

“My go-to favorite stationery items:

Appointed Pencils – any pencil will do, but I love my pencils and supporting a local stationery shop.

Pen – I’ve been a long-time fan of the Uniball Signo DX .38 pens. I’ve been using them for years.

Very close Muji Gel pens – I love how well they write and I’m such a fan of all things Muji

Any clear ruler. I have a Westcott-branded one that I love. Always have it with me for straight lines

Light/medium gray brush pen. I personally love the Tombow’s because they work so nicely in all journals. I use them a lot for drop shadows. You can also layer the color to make it darker without overdoing it. “

Nicole @plansthatblossom

I don’t think Nicole needs a lot of introduction and if you haven’t heard about her yet – go and follow her Instagram, she is really phenomenal!

Her pages are all very unique with her – I would call it – retro style. There is something extra in all her doodles and setups.

She is also the author of the amazing book My Life In Lists, which is basically a fun compilation of different Bullet Journal collections. Super fun to play around with these!

Here is what helps her create the magic:

“My favorite stationery supplies begin and end with notebooks and pens.

I love Archer & Olive journals because I need a high-quality paper that’s thick enough to handle whatever I throw at it!

As for pens, I favor Faber-Castell PITT Artist Pens. The ink is rich without bleeding through, and dries quickly and evenly.”

Nabaa @whimsical.doodles

Nabaa is super talented and has such a distinct Bullet Journal style.

She always uses calm colors and creates the most beautiful drawings on her Bullet Journal pages.

“If I were to pick my favorite bullet journaling must-haves, I’d, of course, start with my Archer and Olive notebook! I enjoy painting a lot in my journal so I’ve gotta have a notebook that is able to take on all the paint I throw at it!

I’ve used so many different mediums in this notebook and have never had issues with bleeding or even ghosting!

Following that up with my obsession with all things gold, I LOVE the Gold Gelly Roll pens by Sakura and the Zig Kuretake Gold Watercolours!

These are my absolute go-to supplies for when I want a little sparkle and shine on my pages. 

Another favorite art supply is paint-pens! I love using both the Posca and Acrylograph pens – they just make it so so much easier to add color into your journal without the mess of paint brushes, palettes, and paint. They’re essentially just ‘paint in pen form which is so cool.

And finally, if you’re looking for a good white pen – the Sakura Gelly Roll is probably your best bet! They’re super opaque and so far I’ve had absolutely no issues using them on top of kraft paper, paints, or markers!”

Julia @julia.pezowicz

Julia is creating some amazing drawings on her Bullet Journal pages. Her drawings are always so cute and bright.

Plus she really has a very unique style.

Meanwhile, here is what she said about her favorite supplies:

“If it comes to my favorite art supplies for journaling I must say watercolors (Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolor pocket box) and waterproof fineliners (Sakura Pigma Micron)!

Using water in your journal takes some practice and even though I still didn’t master it I’m having a lot of fun decorating my spreads with some watercolor washes.

The best thing about watercolor is the fact that you can mix every color you can dream of with only 6 colors! That’s wild.”

Sera @seras.bullet.journal

Sera has a beautiful Bullet Journal and I bet you saw a lot of her work on my different roundup posts.

Moreover, she is probably the only person I know who uses a clipbook as a Bullet Journal, which seems like such a great idea!

Here is what she said about her favorite supplies:

“My first favorite bujo supply is my Filofax Clipbook – I just love that I can take out the pages and that I do not need to redo my future log when the book is full!

Apart from that, I always need a good black brush pen, the Pentel sign pens work best for me.

And last but not least, I love to add some color, that’s where the Tombow Dual Brush pens come in handy, the color range is great and they work well for brush lettering, too!”

Rose @rosekpaperco and @littlemissrose

Rose is absolutely the queen of floral drawings. The flowers that decorate her Bullet Journal pages are to die for, I absolutely have floral envy.

She also creates some amazing stickers on her Etsy shop, you probably saw me using some of them on my vision board.

So talented!

These are her favorite supplies:

“My favorite stationery items that I can’t live without would definitely be Staedtler Pigment liners in a range of sizes. I always use these to set up my bullet journal because they are fast drying and waterproof so I can use brush pens and watercolor paint over top without fear of it smearing.

And for adding color and brush lettering in my journal my favorite would be the Faber Castell Pitt Artist brush pens. They have the perfect size tip, not too small and not too large, and come in a great range of colors.”

Erin @erinflotodesigns

Erin is a YouTuber and she always creates something fun and unique for her Bullet Journal.

I love how creative she is in her journal and how she bravely uses all types of journals like a Blackout book and the Kraft journal.

Here are some of her favorite Bullet Journal supplies:

“My favorite supplies are of course my journal and pen.

I’m currently using an Archer and Olive A5 Blackout Journal because it helps me get way more aesthetic bang for my buck. I don’t feel like I have to overload the pages with decoration.

My everyday go-to pen is a black Muji Gel Pen 0.38. For me, this pen just flows across the page and dries quickly!

I also cannot live without my graph ruler. It is see-through and has grid lines to help get all the sizing perfect!”

Sarah @plan.tful

Sarah has an incredibly unique style. Her pages are very nature-inspired and always make me think of herbal witchcraft and nature magic.

This is what she said when I asked about her favorite stationery:

“Notebook: Pastel Tsuki by Notebook Therapy. I’ve just recently switched to this journal, and I love it. It has everything that I love (thick white paper, dot grid, lots of pages) as well as some unique features that I haven’t seen elsewhere (pastel colors, cozy softcover, and unique size – a bit smaller than A5).

Pens: I have a few pens and markers from the brand Tombow that I’ve been using and loving for years. First, although they’re very well-known, if I’m using color in my journal, 95% of the time I’m using the Tombow Dual Brush Pens.

My favorite colors are 192 (Asparagus), 603 (Periwinkle), 991 (Light Ochre), 772 (Blush), and 451 (Sky Blue). For writing, I use the Tombow Mono Drawing Pen in 0.4.

Stickers and Washi: I’ve been loving the washi tapes by the brand Girl of All Work. They have such cute and fun patterns, my favorites are the Oranges and Cherry Blossoms Washi Tapes!“

Patrizia @lifeinabujo

Patrizia is a talented illustrator, and she brings her cute character to her Bullet Journal pages.

On her Instagram account, you can find tons of tutorials, and – she is also a Skillshare teacher.

She has wonderful classes on how to use watercolor in your Bullet Journal, how to create kawaii illustrations, and more! You can take them completely free when you sign up for the Skillshare trial and get premium access to thousands of different courses for two weeks.

Here are her favorite supplies:

“I like to try new supplies from time to time but during the years I’ve found my “best friends” and I wouldn’t ever get rid of them!

I found myself canceling the existence of regular pens because I’m obsessed with Staedtler Pigment Fineliner (of different sizes). They’re the best for me that watercolors most of the time.

A new entry is the white Uniposca pen cause it never fails, it works on every type of media.

I’m not a fan of markers but the Atopens by DingbatsNotebooks are the best I’ve tried so far and I use them always I forgot about the other ones I have!

Also another inseparable are the Faber Castell Polychromos pencils. I use them for shades and they revolutionized the way I draw.

And in general, for bujoing, I am inseparable from the Tsuki pencil case by NotebookTherapy that keeps all my favorite supplies together.”

Barbara @barbarahaegerart

Barbara has a really unique drawing style, I’ve never seen anything like that. Her drawings always look super fun and happy.

“Hi Masha; my favorite supplies are pretty simple. I use markers and colored pencils. Fineliners and brush markers the most.

My number one supply is the UniBall Signo White gel pen. I use it as a white-out and also to add details. I go through a lot of them!”

Estrella @bujoforstars

Estrella creates just the most bright and most colorful spreads you can find! Her Bullet Journal just screams with happiness and positivity.

And her lettering is just so pretty! 

Here are her favorites:

“When it comes to journaling I can’t go without my Tombow Fudenosuke (hard tip) and the Pentel touch! Both in a basic black color are perfect to make beautiful headers and add some details.

Then, Tombow Dual Brush Pens are another must! The variety of colors and the flexible nib make them just the best friend for both coloring and lettering.

Speaking of coloring, Crayola Supertips are one of the best value for money available! A huge range of colors and with a beginner-friendly tip!!

However, I must outline that pencil and eraser are and will always be an artist/planner best ally!!”

Rachel @planningmindfully

Rachel is a star in the Bullet Journal world, with her own book “Ready-to-Use Habit Trackers” and her amazing blog Planning Mindfully.

She uses her Bullet Journal as a tool for productivity and mental health and really has a lot to share in this area.

Her spreads are always fun and bright, I love her uplifting and useful spreads.

Below are the supplies she uses in her Bullet Journal:

“My favorite bullet journal tools are my Le Pens fineliners! I got them on a trip to a stationery store and they’ve quickly become a must-have for my bullet journaling.

I always find other brands either smear or dry out quickly, but the Le Pens do neither. I highly recommend it!”

Stina @supermassiveblackink

Stina is absolutely my favorite minimalist account. Her spreads are so aesthetically pleasing and perfect.

All her spreads are absolute proof that less is more and you don’t need thousands of dollars of stationery to create stunning pages.

Here is what she named her favorite supplies:

“I’m quite minimal in my supply collection, and I’ve grown to deeply appreciate what a thin black pen can help you create – the most varied and intricate drawings or decorative features, or simply just a truly minimal spread, words on the page, planning to happen.

For most of my layouts, I use Unipin fineliners, which are felt tip pens in various thicknesses. I prefer the thinner ones. I adore these fineliners because they neither bleed, ghost or feather in my Nuuna notebooks, the tips are nice and rounded and the ink is a true black – not the greenish or blueish you sometimes get.

For most of my writing, I use the Juice up 0.3 in black, which is a metal tip pen. It’s a bit rougher on the page but less fragile than my felt tips. The ink doesn’t smear and the strokes become nice and even! A lovely all-rounder and definitely my ”workhorse pen”!

For a notebook, I always go for a Nuuna. Their dot grid is smaller than in other brands and the dots are nice and light on the page. A big bonus is that They now have vegan covers as well.

My last set of supplies – Those of you who know me or follow me know this – is a nice strong cup of coffee and a piece of chocolate to keep me company whilst bullet journaling away, writing my journal entries, and planning my day!”

Fenke @fenkesjournal

Fenke has such a fun and colorful style in her Bullet Journal.

I love the colors she uses in her Bullet Journal spreads and how seamlessly she incorporates her own stickers.

Here are some of her favorites:

“When I started out bullet journalling I saw Crayola Supertips everywhere, so I bought a 50 pack. A lot of colors for such a good price, and because of the chiseled tip, you can also do a bit of lettering similar to brush lettering.

Other than that I’d say some waterproof fineliners are a must. I use the Sakura Pigma Micron ones.

Rachel @rachelmayplans

Rachel creates the most stunning Bullet Journal pages. She does black and white as well as color, and all her spreads look so incredible!

I would definitely just put a few in a frame and right there on the wall.

Below are her absolute must-haves:

“I like to keep my supplies pretty minimal as I update my bujo on the go (so everything I need has to fit in one little pencil case).

My absolutely essential supplies are a pencil, a rubber (or eraser if you’re American!), a ruler (I have the Helix stainless steel one), and a fineliner. I’ve tried so many brands of fineliners but I always end up going back to my trusted Unipin 0.1 – it’s just so versatile.

I’ve also very recently discovered the Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Big Brush Pen and it has been an absolutely brilliant addition!

I feel like as long as I have my essentials, everything else is just extra fun to experiment with!”

Kate @journalwithkate

Kate is a newfound account for me but she is absolutely fantastic!

Her pages are very light and clean but also full of color.

“Let’s start with the notebook. My favorite bullet journal is hands down the Archer and Olive dot-gridded notebook. It has thick and bright white pages that prevent ghosting and bleeding.

In terms of pens, I still sketch everything out with a pencil. So a pencil and an eraser are must-haves. My favorite fineliners are the Uni Pin finliners in different sizes.

If I have to choose one type of art supply for a touch of color, I’m going with the Tombow Dual Tip brush pens! These are so versatile! I can letter and color with these. You can also create beautiful watercolor effects with these markers!

Last but not least I have to add the Tombow Fudenosuke brush pen. This is the perfect brush pen for lettering as a beginner”
