Tips On How To Doodle

Doodling is a skill everyone can learn, even if you don’t think of yourself as a creative person.

So here I wanted to share some basic tips on doodling that will help you turn these simple tutorials into adorable doodles that spark on your Bullet Journal pages.

  • Look for basic shapes. Every doodle consists of basic shapes, and once you start seeing them, it’ll be so much easier to start doodling. So even if you see a big scary doodle, start by dividing it into small basic shapes, and you’ll be just fine.
  • Start with a pencil. This helps ensure the doodle is coming out the way I want it to. Plus, that way, you can start doodling from the basic shape and work your way around it.
  • Practice. The biggest secret to getting better at doodling is to practice. So even if your first try doesn’t look as pretty as you imagined it in your head – just keep on doodling. The next one will be better, and the one after that will be even better.

These are pretty easy tricks but trust me they will make a difference and will help you to master this fun skill.

Doodling Supplies

Before we dive into the tutorials, let’s talk stationery. Thankfully you actually don’t need that much to start doodling, a piece of paper and a pen would be enough.

But the supplies really can help you doodling with more ease and so I thought I’d share some of my favorite ones.

  • Pilot Dr. Grip Mechanical Pencil – it’s important when you doodle to have a comfortable pencil grip, and the one on this Pilot pencil is probably the best I ever had.
  • Sakura Foam Eraser – you want a quality eraser that won’t leave any color behind; my choice is foam erasers. Just always make sure you take some time before erasing so your pen doesn’t smudge.
  • Faber Castell Pigment Pen – there are plenty of great fineliners on the market (Sakura Pigma Micron and Unipin are among my favorites), but at the moment, I’m doing all the doodles with this pen.

There are, of course, many more pens and other supplies you can get to help you with your doodling, but then this post would be just about supplies.

If you’re interested in more, be sure to check the end of the post for links to more recommendations. Meanwhile, let’s dive into those doodling tutorials and bring the spirit of Christmas to your Bullet Journal pages.

Bullet Journal Christmas Doodles

Even the most intricate-looking Christmas doodles are built from simple shapes that anyone can master. Let’s dive into these tutorials and discover how each doodle is crafted step by step.

Once you see how easily these designs come together, you’ll be ready to draw anything your imagination inspires!

How To Doodle Gingerbread Man

Let’s start with a simple and fun doodle—a gingerbread man. Even though this was not a Christmas tradition in my home country, it’s now synonymous with the holiday season.

The fun part of this doodle is that you also get to play around a lot with way you actually decorate your little cookie.

How To Doodle A Christmas Tree

Of course, the most obvious doodle for the holiday season is a Christmas tree! There are many different ways to draw it, but I like to make it more round and adorable.

And again, there are still a thousand ways you can decorate the tree itself, just like in real life.

How To Doodle A Christmas Stocking

This is not a very common tradition in my country, but I got lucky with my parents, who introduced me to Christmas stockings, and I was filled with joy every time I found a chocolate bar there or some cute hair clips.

On this particular doodle, I added a full-on wrapped gift, but you can definitely play around with what kind of things you’d like to be showing inside it, or maybe don’t add anything at all.

How To Doodle A Snowman

Building snowmen is always going to be my favorite winter activity, and I sometimes miss the cold, snowy winters to enjoy this activity.

It’s not necessarily a very Christmas doodle, but for me, the holiday season is so closely connected to winter activities! Plus, if you want to make this doodle more holiday-themed, you can always add a Christmas has on top of it.

How To Doodle Holiday Bells

I think these are perfect for the holiday season, and they would look beautiful on any DIY Christmas card you’d want to create this year.

You can also use this doodle when you draw a Christmas wreath or maybe as a decoration on your Christmas tree drawing.

How To Doodle Snowglobe

There is something special and magical about a snow globe. The glittering snow falling inside it adds to the atmosphere of the holiday season.

I love that you get to play around with what you actually want to add to your snow globe; you can customize it to be more or less Christmasy.

How To Draw A Polar Bear

Considering Santa lives in the North Pole, you surely have this association with polar bears and Christmas.

Plus, if you want to make it more on-theme, you can always dress up the bear in a Christmas hat and scarf.

How To Doodle Christmas Tree Decoration

These doodles are great to add to your Christmas Bullet Journal pages and are perfect ideas for DIY holiday projects.

You also have a chance to play around with different patterns and colors you want to use inside the ball to decorate it.

How To Doodle Hot Chocolate

There is no Christmas for me without hot Christmas drinks. There is a special happening in cozying up under a warm blanket, watching the Christmas lights and sipping on a delicious hot drink.

And again, you can definitely play around with the colors and designs of your cup for this doodle. Use more Christmas colors or add some holiday patterns to the cup.

How To Draw A Candy Cane

Speaking of delicious things, a candy cane is definitely the sweet of the holiday season.

Even though I must admit, I like the look of these more than the flavor. Or is it that I never had a very good one? Let me know what your feelings are towards candy cane in the comments.

How To Doodle Holiday Mail

The holiday season is always full of mail, be is you as a kid writing your Santa letters or you as an adult checking that you sent Christmas cards to everyone you love.

Handwritten letters seem pretty old-fashioned, but I really like it, and for me, a signed physical Christmas card is always a special treat.
