First Page Tips For Bullet Journal Beginners

well, these tips would actually work for anyone who is starting a new Bullet Journal. Trust me, even after all those yearly still, every time I open a new journal, I also still feel a bit anxious to start on that first-page design.

The first page of your Bullet Journal might feel like it carries a lot of weight, but honestly, it doesn’t. Chances are, it’ll be the least polished part of your journal, and you know what? That’s completely fine.

Here’s the thing—every single entry you create helps you improve.

And, to be honest, the first page probably won’t be one you revisit often. I’ve had my share of first pages that didn’t turn out the way I hoped, and I remember feeling a bit disappointed in the moment.

I had an idea this would look so cute, but now, looking back at it, I low-key hate how it looks.

But as you get deeper into Bullet Journaling, you’ll find that the first page doesn’t hold as much significance as it once did. Over time, it just becomes part of the process and no longer feels like such a big deal.

I’m sharing this with you so you don’t feel trapped by the pressure of creating the “perfect” first page. If it feels like too much, skip it altogether and jump right into the fun part—getting organized and creative.

Remember, Bullet Journaling is all about progress and growth. It’s not about achieving perfection, but about enjoying the process of discovering what works for you.

Ok, this is the important message I felt like I needed to share; now, let’s dive into the fun and creative party of making the first page in your journal.

Stationery Recommendations

Let’s be clear here – if all you have is one black pen, you definitely can create a beautiful first page. But isn’t it more fun to have some extra supplies that are high quality and you love using them when you sit down to create something?

So here are a few I can recommend:

  • Sakura Pigma Micron – these fineliners are some of the best and can be essential in creating every Bullet Journal page. Plus, they come in a set of different nib sizes, so you can get a variety of line thicknesses.
  • Tombow Fude Brush Pen – these tiny brush pens are amazing for brush lettering, even if you’re a complete beginner. They are also great for drawing and are a handy tool for any Bulle Journaler.
  • Crayola Super Tips – if you want to add color to your Bullet Journal pages, these pens are amazing. They have a lot of colors and are pretty affordable. If you want to invest a bit more into your colored markers, try out Tombow Dual Brush Pens who also come in many colors and have a brush and a marker tip.
  • Washi Tape – these little pieces of colorful paper are perfect for decorating your Bullet Journal, and there are so many different designs to choose from.

Ok, we’ve got the supplies ready, so let’s start with the ideas.

What To Put On The First Page Of A Bullet Journal

I always say that your journal – your rules, so anything and everything can be an idea for your first page, even if you just want to use the first page to test your pens.

You are the creator of your journey, and there is no wrong way to do it, no matter what you might’ve heard.

But to help you get started and push you in the creative direction, I gathered here ideas that are beginner-friendly and built to help you see that it doesn’t have to be a scary thing so you can quickly start your new journal right away.

The Current Year

The easiest way to start your Bullet Journal is by writing the current year or the dates when you started the journal and when you finished using it.

It’s simple, and it’s very useful for future archiving – the first page already gives you important information on what part of your life this journal covered.

And you can get as creative and as simple with this idea as you want. You can simply write it in any color you like or create some kind of illustration around it and turn this page into a colorful explosion.

Or, like me, you can use some kraft paper to add a bit of character.

Name Your Journal

I got this idea from Caitlin Da Silva, I think. But don’t quote me on that; I really don’t remember.

The idea is to give your journal more personality by naming it, and that way, you can use that as an idea for your first page as well.

It can be a simple text or something you decorate with stickers. Either way, this is a very cute idea to make your journal a bit more dear to you.

Create A Pattern

If you want your layout to be fun and colorful but are not sure about your creative skills and having enough time to create a big illustration, you can always go with the idea of creating patterns.

You can use colored pen to fill out the page with simple patterns; it almost feels like a meditation activity. Perfect to calm down your anxiety of starting a new journal.

Alternatively, you can also create a pattern with stamps, stickers, or washi tapes you have in your collection.

This particular page actually combines the idea of patterns and naming your journal. But if I’m honest, I wish I hadn’t added that little element with the name of the journal; I think the pattern just looked so much better.

Word Of The Year

Word of the year is a very powerful practice. It helps you set intentions for the year ahead and helps you stay on track with your goals.

The world of the year is there to remind you of your vision for your future, which will, in turn, help you figure out what pages to use and what steps to take in your life to make it what you want it to be.

Yes, just one word can have that much power, and if you want to learn more about this practice, I have a whole blog post about it. You can find the link at the end of this post.

Every time I do the word of the year, I like adding the meaning of the word. And not just any, but the particular meaning that speaks to me and that I put when I use this word.

Like with all of these ideas, you can make it easy or a bit more elaborate. You can simply write it down with your usual handwriting. You can try out some different creative fonts if you want. You can even go a step further and decorate the page with colors or washi tape.

It’s all up to you and how much time you want to spend on your first page.

Bullet Journal Key

The last idea, at least last on this list, is to use your first page to create a key page.

As a beginner, this is a very important page for you to use since it helps you to learn and memorize the language of Bullet Journaling and take all the system has to offer.

Since you’ll be creating this page anyway, you might as well use it as your first page. This takes away a;l;l the pressure from coming up with a perfect idea, and it’s something useful that will help you with your journey.

And just like with all the other pages, you can go simple and just write down your signifiers, or maybe go extra and add color, patterns, washi tape, and any other type of decorations.

And there you go; here are five different ideas to inspire you to start thinking in a creative and practical way about your first page, overcome. the fear, and start your Bullet Journal right away.

Remember that you can take any idea and customize it to your needs, make it easy and minimalist if this is your style, or go full in with illustrations if creative layouts are what you love.
