Watercolor has a lot of water, so you might actually think that it’s not a good technique to use in your Bullet Journal. But actually, it is absolutely possible to do so as long as you have a good paper.

I would definitely recommend getting at least 160 GSM paper since the thicker the paper, the better it would work with watercolor, but with a few special techniques, you can also do watercolor on 120 GSM paper.

Plus, of course, there are separate watercolor journals that use special watercolor paper for their pages.

Let me know if you’d like a separate blog post about tricks on using watercolor in your Bullet Journal. I don’t use watercolor a lot, but I will be happy to research and experiment if you want to learn more about it.

In this blog post, I gathered ideas and inspirations from creators who absolutely rock in using watercolor in their Bullet Journal pages to show you just a few ideas on how you can add your favorite medium to your pages.

But first, supplies.

Watercolor Stationery Recommendations

Getting the right supplies is especially important when it comes to using watercolor in your Bullet Journal.

So here are a few recommendations from me and all the people I talked to who extensively use watercolor in their journals.

  • High-quality notebook. Having a journal with a good paper is the key to using watercolor on your pages. My top recommendations are Archer and Olive notebooks (you can get 10% OFF with my code MASHA10) and Scribbles That Matter (be sure to choose 160 GSM one and also get 10% OFF with code SAVE10).
  • Watercolors. There are plenty available. I think Prang is a good one to start with since it is pretty affordable. Windsor And Newton in tubes are high-quality quality, expensive options, but the benefit apart from everything else is that with tubes, you get better control of how much water you use, or maybe it’s just how it feels to me.
  • Water Based Pens. You can actually use your water-based markers as watercolor, something like Tombow Dual Brush Pens. But the best pens that I think work as watercolor are Karin Brushmarker Pro.
  • Brushes. You can use normal brushes, like round brushes or something like aqua brushes that already come with water inside.
  • Metallic Watercolors. This is something I wanted to mention separately since they are very special and popular to bring ab it extra to your pages. You could get something like Kuretake Gansai watercolors.
  • Fineliners. Black pens that you can use on watercolor to add doodles or headers, and Sakura Pigma Micron pens are probably the best for that.

That’s probably enough; just talking about watercoloring supplies can take too long, and this post is not about that, so let’s dive in and look at the ways to incorporate watercolor into your Bullet Journal.
