Back To School Bullet Journal Theme Inspirations

Exploring a specific theme can be a great way to stay organized, and back to school is an especially fun one: it’s easy to create a very elaborate or minimalist design, and you get to doodle all types of stationery!
To showcase just how differently you can approach this super fun theme, I’ve collected several pages here. These will definitely jump-start your creativity and help you find your own unique approach to this theme.
I’ve been bullet journaling since 2018, and I must admit that stationery and back-to-school have been my favorite themes so far; I keep coming back to them over and over again.
So here, I’ll share plenty of pages from my own journal, but I also included many layouts from other talented creators, so you get a variety of ideas and styles to be inspired by.

Back To School Themed Bullet Journal Inspirations
I started creating this theme in Fall, especially September, since it is a back-to-school season and it seemed like a good match. But pretty soon I was doing it any month of the year.
And you can do the same – you can try this theme any time you want; always remember that it’s your journal and you make the rules!
With that being said, let’s dive in and look at some of the layouts I gathered for you.
September Cover Page
All being said, let’s start with the first back-to-school theme that I’ve ever created in my journal.
It was a very easy theme to create, and you can do it as well. All it really required was a few pretty simple stationery doodles. To make it a little more interesting, I added a rectangle around it to make it look like it’s drawn in a notebook (which seems redundant since it’s already inside the notebook, but you know how it is).
Pen And Pencil Bullet Journal Setup
Technically, she called this theme “pen and pencil”, but I would say this is a perfect example of a back-to-school theme!
This creator uses many of her own digital designs to decorate and create her layouts, which is why you get a very different look from her layouts. It is a great way to speed up your monthly setups, and if you’re not certain of your own skills, you can always get designs from other creators.
Back To School Mood Tracker
I absolutely love this mood tracker! Especially how the header is basically a chalkboard, like in every classroom I’ve been to as a kid.
Mood trackers for back-to-school; themes are great because there are so many stationery items, and they come in so many colors.
School Cover Page
This is a very beautiful cover page, and I love the black-and-white aesthetic with just a few color accents. It really creates a special feeling.
Also, the creator added word cutouts, and this is a fun trick to make the layout look different. Plus, if you can’t really do brush lettering that well, you can always print out letters first.
Positivity Notes
This is one of the pages from my own back-to-school-themed setup. It’s kind of a gratitude log, but I decided to make it a bit more fun by dividing it into sections like different types of school supplies.
Back To School Weekly Log
Beautiful weekly log with cute little stationery doodles. I really love that the paper here is kraft; it makes every page look different.
Plus the back that the daily boxes are held on a pegboard really creates these school vibes.
Stationery Themed Cover
This is my cover page for March, but I still think it’s back-to-school-themed since it is decorated with stationery doodles.
Here is a trick I used for this theme to give it a slightly different style: instead of coloring the doodles, I kept them in black and white but added some color behind them.
Back To School Weekly Spread
I love how it has a very clean, minimalist look, even when the tasks are already written here. It’s also a fun way to make the spread more school-themed by using different types of paper as daily boxes.
I don’t know if this creator did it on purpose, but I always find that things look cuter if they are smaller in size – like the header letters being thin or their handwriting being so tiny and adorable.
August Cover Page
Here is the cover page from that time when I did a back-to-school theme in my square notebook. This journal had a very different size, so it was a new, interesting challenge to create layouts there.
As you can see, I also went with black and the doodles, and I only added muted colors from my Frixion Pens for the headers.
Back To School Monthly Log
A beautiful monthly log that, at first glance, looks like it’s fall-themed. But if you look closer, you can see the slight stationery doodles that remind you that it’s a back-to-school season.
I love this poetcore style, and I really wish I could create such a beautiful aesthetic in my BuJo. But I can tell you that using kraft paper and book pages as decorations will definitely help you achieve the same feeling in yours.
Back To School Cover Page
This is such a beautiful cover page, and I love the bright colors the creator used.
I feel like this creator basically made a stationery flatlay photo as a cover page in their journal. It’s a good idea, actually, in case you aren’t sure how to decorate your pages – look for some stationery flatlay photos; they will be a great inspiration for what to draw and how to place items.
Pegboard Weekly Spread
Technically, the theme for this weekly spread is pegboard, but I think it is kind of fitting for a back-to-school theme.
I used different paper designs for all the types of notebooks I used for schoolwork, and the whole pegboard reminds me of my school desk.
Stationery Recommendation
If you want to recreate any of these pages or create a brand new take on the “back to school” theme, you’ll need some supplies!
Of course, you can use anything you already have! But if you want something a bit extra, here are a few of my recommendations.
- Sakura Pigma Micron – a good set of fineliners is the blood of your journal, and this brand is amazing and has smooth black ink.
- Crayola Super Tips – this is a fantastic set of markers; they come in many different colors, and you can actually use them for brush lettering as well.
- Zebra Mildliners – these are the most school-themed highlighters; they also come in beautiful colors and have a marker tip. They are my go-to markers, especially for a “back to school” theme.
- Pilot Frixion Markers – one more set of amazing markers that come in beautiful colors. Plus, they are actually erasable!
