Even after all the years of journaling, starting a new notebook still feels a bit overwhelming.

You’re looking at these beautiful, untouched pages that will be your companion for the upcoming months, and the possibilities are endless. But taking the first step is worrying.

What if it won’t look good? What if it’s not perfect, and the whole notebook will be ruined? I bet you have plenty of thoughts like that running in your head. And if you do, I have a separate post on overcoming your fears and getting started, which you can find at the end.

But one of the best ways to motivate yourself to get started is to have a plan and know what exactly you’re trying to create on your first page, and this is what we’re talking about today.

I’ll share some tips and tricks and some pretty simple ideas for your front page, so you’ll be inspired and motivated to get started right away. I also created a FREE printable for you, so be sure to check it at the end of the post.

Front Page Tip For Beginners

I have one important thing to share with you, so much so that I made it a separate section of this blog post.

I know how it is: you start a journal, and you feel like the first page is the most important thing in the whole world. It will make or break the journal, set the entire mood for your journal, and, therefore, the way your life goes.

You feel like it has to be perfect, or else you might as well not even bother with journaling. Does any of this sound familiar?

Well, the truth is—the importance of the first page is only in your head, and the reality is completely opposite.

First of all, your first page will likely be the worst page of your journal. You get better with your skills the more Bullet Journal pages you create, so it’s natural that the first page in your journal will be worse than the last one.

I still cringe every time I see this cover page, I thought it would look so cute!

The important thing here is that you got started and took the first step. Give yourself a pat on the back for it!

Secondly, your first page definitely doesn’t set the mood for the entire journal. In fact, chances are you will never look at your first page at all. So far, in my years of Bullet Journaling, I only look at my first pages when I need to write a blog post like this one.

Remember that all these worries and overthinking are in your head. So, let’s leave it all to you and, in the meantime, pick an idea for you to explore on your front page.

Stationery Recommendations

Let’s be clear here—if all you have is one black pen, you can definitely create a beautiful first page. But I believe it’s more fun and enjoyable to journal when you use quality supplies you love.

So here are a few I can recommend:

  • Sakura Pigma Micron – these fineliners are some of the best and can be essential in creating every Bullet Journal page. Plus, they come in a set of different nib sizes, so you can get a variety of line thicknesses.
  • Tombow Fude Brush Pen – these tiny brush pens are amazing for brush lettering, even if you’re a complete beginner. They are also great for drawing and are a handy tool for any Bullet Journaler.
  • Crayola Super Tips – if you want to add color to your Bullet Journal pages, these pens are amazing. They have a lot of colors and are pretty affordable. If you want to invest a bit more into your colored markers, try out Tombow Dual Brush Pens who also come in many colors and have a brush and a marker tip.
  • Washi Tape – these little pieces of colorful paper are perfect for decorating your Bullet Journal, and there are so many different designs to choose from.

Ok, we’ve got the supplies ready, so let’s start with the ideas.

Bullet Journal Front Page Ideas For Beginners

Remember that this is your journal, so you are free to do anything you want with it and make your own rules.

In fact, if you want to skip the first page and dive into planning right away instead, you can definitely go for it!

You could come back and add a first-page design later or just leave it blank—you decide what works best for your journal.

But if you’re ready, here are a few pretty simple ideas you could explore as the front page of your journal.

Bullet Journal Key

As a beginner, you’ll definitely need to master the Bullet Journal language and shortcuts. A key page is one of the basic and important pages to include.

It can definitely be an idea for your first page since it will set the symbols that define your Bullet Journal.

Current Year

This is probably my favorite idea for the first page since it allows you to see exactly when you used this journal.

It can be as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be, and you will find it very helpful for the future. Once you have a large collection of notebooks, a first page like this will help you easily archive them and find the journal you’re looking for.

Word Of The Year

Choosing one word to symbolise and be your guiding light for the upcoming year or the journal is a fun way to decorate your front page.

It’s a powerful practice that can help guide you towards your goals and clarify your intentions.

You can make this page as simple or as elaborate as you wish. I sometimes also like to add more text to it to clarify what exact meaning this word has for me in the context of my life.

Name Your Journal

I saw somebody doing this, and I absolutely love this idea – try using your first page to name your journal. I think it’s a fun way to make it more personal.

I wish it worked for me, but I think I prefer dividing my journals by the years when I used them rather than by names. But the idea is adorable, and maybe it will stick with you.

Quote Page

This is very similar to the word of the year—you can add a quote or a saying that resonates with you at the moment.

It will help you set intentions for this journal, and maybe it can be something motivational to help you build a habit of using your Bullet Journal every day.

The best part is that you can make it as simple or as elaborate as you want to. For example, here is my 2025 journal, where the theme was all about starting a new chapter in my life and in my Bullet Journal adventures

If you want to go a bit extra, you always can. Here is an example of a quote page I’ve created before when I felt extra creative.

And at the end of this pots tehre is a link to a tutorials on how to cretae quote pages in your Bullet Journal if this is what you’d like to explore more of.

About Me Page

This is a slightly more elaborate idea, but I love it so much that I wanted to share it with you.

An about-me page can have any look you want, but for me, when I use it at the beginning of a journal, it’s like a little printout of who I am and what’s happening in my life as I start the journal.

I love looking back at all my About Me pages and seeing how my life changed and how my journaling style and habits changed depending on what was happening.

I usually go very detail-oriented and add a lot to my about-me pages, but you can create something simpler if you like the idea.

I also have a blog post that talks more about these layouts and all the things you can do with them, so be sure to check the link at the end of this post.

Pattern Front Page

Last but not least, here’s a pretty simple idea: decorate your first page with some pattern designs.

You can use different shapes or create patterns using washi tape. Whatever you choose, this is a fun and almost meditative practice.

I hope that when you’re done with this page, you’ll not only have a cute layout but also generally feel calmer about starting a new journal.

And there you go. Here are a few pretty simple ideas for your front page, and I’m pretty sure these will help you get started on your Bullet Journal right away.
