What Is Hand Lettering

Hand lettering is a delightful fusion of sketching and writing, creating an art form that’s as unique as you are. It’s all about drawing letters, giving them a personality of their own.

This creative process can infuse a personal touch into your Bullet Journal, greeting cards, or any text-centric project you’re working on. And remember, when I say hand lettering, I’m not referring to calligraphy or brush lettering.

But if those art forms have sparked your interest, hang tight till the end of this post – I’ve got some fabulous resources lined up for you.

Hand Lettering Supplies

Before we dive into the courses, let me mention a few stationery items that you’ll find useful on your journey to discovering hand lettering.

I often find that having the right supplies helps not only create more beautiful pieces but also generally feel more motivated to start soemthing new.

Of course, you can use anything you already have in your collection. But if you want something extra, these are my recommendations:

  • A comfortable pencil. Especially when you’re doing hand lettering, you will have to use a pencil a lot, and having one with a comfortable grip will help you enjoy the hobby more. My recommendation is Pilot Dr. Grip mechanical pencil.
  • Good fineliners. I think fineliners, with their archival ink, smooth writing, and beautiful black lines that stay dark, are perfect for hand lettering projects. Plus, they usually come in sets with different nib sizes, allowing you to add more variety to your lettering. My top pick are Sakura Pigma Micron.
  • Markers. Something to add color to your lettering work. For hand lettering my top picks are Tombow Twin Tone Markers, but I also highly recommend Crayola Super Tips.
  • Tombow Fude brush pen. If you want to add a bit of brush lettering to your hand lettering pieces, this is absolutely the best pen to do so. It’s perfect for beginners and has a small tip that will allow for some detailed work.

Now, with all the supplies at ready, let’s talk about the free classes you can take.
