Your Bullet Journal is quite literally only limited by your imagination, and the same concept applies to the themes that you can try on your pages.
Anything in the world can be an inspiration for a theme idea for your monthly setup, but with such a wide variety, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and feel stuck.
That’s why posts like this one are so powerful – they can show you some possibilities, help you choose the theme, or maybe just inspire you to come up with your own unique idea.
But before we discuss the themes’ ideas, I have something I want to discuss first.
How to Use Themes In Your Bullet Journal
Especially if you’re a beginner, themes might be confusing and maybe sometimes restricting as well. So here I want to mention something important—always remember that your journal has rules.
It’s up to you what you do in your Bullet Journal; there is no right or wrong way to do it.
But with that being said, I wanted to highlight here a few ways you can use a theme in your Bullet Journal, at least to give you some examples.
- One Theme For The Entire Journal
First of all, if you don’t want to bother changing themes, you can always use the same style or theme throughout your journal.
It will help you keep it pretty and aesthetic while alleviating any pressure to choose a new theme every month or so.
- New Theme Every Month
This is probably the most common and widespread approach to using them in your journal.
You basically choose a theme for the month, and all the pages you create are within the same theme.
I like it because it kind of easily divides your journal by months. Plus, it allows you to bring more variety and experiment with new ideas and styles each month.
- New Theme On Each Page
But here is the beauty of the Bullet Journal method – you can do anything you want with your BuJo.
So if you feel like constricting yourself to one specific theme every month is too much, you always have a choice of trying something different on every new page you create.
Or, you can try a monthly theme, and if in the middle of the month you feel like you’re tired of it and it’s not working, switch it up right there and then!
It’s your journal, so the best approach is to play around and try different techniques until you find what approach works best for you and helps you enjoy your journaling experience more.

Stationery Recommendations
You don’t need all the supplies, but having a few quality pens and markers that you love using will definitely help you make journaling more enjoyable.
So here are a few quick recommendations:
- Fineliners. You’ll need them to create all the pages, and they are especially great for doodling and drawing. I recommend trying Sakura Pigma Micron.
- Markers. In case you want to add some color, you’ll need some. I recommend starting with Crayola Super Tips since they come in so many colors and are pretty affordable. My second choice would probably be these Tombow Dual Brush Pens.
- Brush Pens. These are perfect for creating beautiful headers, and I’d recommend starting with Tombow Fude small brush pens.
- Stencils. Stencils are a great way to speed up your setup process and there are plenty of stencils that come with many decorative elements, like flowers or beautiful lettering fonts. Check out the stencils from my favorite shop, Jayden’s Apple.
Okay, enough about supplies. It’s time to bring all your pens and start creating your next Bullet Journal page. And that starts with choosing a theme!

This is a lot of themes, and I’m sure this is just scratching the surface of what is possible to do in your Bullet Journal.
So this is how this list will be organized: I divided themes by a common category, and in each category, I’ll include theme ideas as well as a few pages that inspire some of these themes.
I wish I could give you inspiration for each theme, but then this post would never end. So I’ll share a few inspirations, and if you want to see more, check out a few links at the end of this post.
