Monthly Bullet Journal Themes

Sharing is caring!

Bullet Journal theme ideas can transform your dull day-to-day planning into something unique, making each month feel fresh and inspiring. And I believe the more engaging we make planning, the more likely we are to stick to using our journals.

As someone who loves experimenting with designs, Iโ€™ve curated a collection of monthly Bullet Journal themes based on my own creations. From whimsical doodles to minimalist aesthetics, these ideas are perfect for adding personality to your pages while staying organized.

Whether youโ€™re a seasoned journaler or just starting out, these themes offer endless inspiration to match your mood, the season, or your goals. Letโ€™s explore how you can bring your journal to life with unique, monthly themes that spark joy!

My credentials are simple – I’ve been Bullet Journaling since 2018, and as you can imagine, I tried plenty of different themes in many journals I’ve had during the years.

I truly believe that making your journal more creative and fun is something that helpy iou stuick to planning habits and actually get the full benefits.

Even more so, I find that just the process of creating fun, themed Bullet Journal pages is calming and inspiring, making me want to do more. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one. The process of creating different themed layouts is almost its own type of meditation.

Before we move on to different themes, I want to note something important – you do not have to have a theme. Yes, all over social media, you see those creative and beautiful layouts with different themes. But it is social media.

Your real Bullet Journla doens’t have to be that way. If you want to keep the same theme every month – do that! If you don’t want to do any themes at all, this is your choice.

Always remember that your journal is yours and you are the one who sets the rules.

Also, if you don’t like your theme in the middle of the month, you are free to change it completely and try something different. Exploring this is also part of the fun of Bullet Journaling.

Now, before I share with you some themes that I created in my Bullet Journal, I wanted to mention that at the end of the post, you’ll find some FREE Bullet Journal printables that you can start using right away, including 12 cover pages, one for each month of the year.

Monthly Bullet Journal Themes

Your Bullet Journal is a little bit like an imprint of your life, and I find it very fun to look back at different themes I tried, different styles, and supplies. Each tells a story of my changes and growth.

So walk down this memory lane together and see which of these themes will spark your imagination.

Floral Bullet Journal Theme

There are many ways to approach this theme, and it is one of the most popular themes for a reason.

You can draw flowers in different ways and styles, and in all the possible colors. Plus, they are a good fit for any season!

This is a cover page from my first Bullet Journal that I started in March 2018, and that only lasted me four months. I was still not very confident with my drawing skills,s so the floral doodles are all pretty basic.

In case you wonder, for colors here I used my pastel set of Tombow Dual Brush pens. These were the first fancy brush pens I bought, and they are still one of my favorite color combinations.

For another idea for a floral theme, here is a cover page from the same journal where I went a bit bolder.

Since I’ve already been journaling for a few months, I wanted to do a theme with bigger florals.

And here is another floral cover page. This one is from July 2025.

Sunflowers are actually super easy to draw, and this entire theme I just kept repeating this one sunflower doodle. So, in fact, it was a very simple monthly setup.

Travel BuJo Theme

The beauty of choosing a theme for your Bullet Journal is that pretty much anything can be a theme; you just need to spark your imagination.

In August 2019, I was moving countries and continents, so my theme was travel, and I think it came out looking pretty cute.

Stationery Bullet Journal Theme

As I said, anything can be a theme. The way I came up with this particular idea was pretty simple – I was thinking of what kind of things I could doodle quickly but still have fun with. For me, the answer is simple – stationery.

This is actually a theme I went back to creating over and over again, but I think this first take is still my favorite.

However, here is another of my stationery themes, this one I created in 2025.

This time, I went with a different aesthetic by using minimal amounts of colors and playing instead with black and white for the doodles.

This is a great example that even if you use the same doodles, with a few changes, you can create a completely different look and aesthetic to your theme.

Coffee Journal Theme

I think coffee and journaling are pretty much connected. What is better than journaling with a hot cup of coffee? So it’s logical that you would want to bring this theme to your Bullet Journal as well.

The first time I did a coffee theme, as you will see, I also combined it a little bit with books and reading.

The second time I did this theme, I actually used a square notebook, which created a very different effect on all the pages. If you wonder, this is an Archer & Olive journal, and you can get 10% OFF with my code MASHA10.

I also went for a different style, instead of bright and colorful, it’s more minimalist and aesthetic with kraft paper aesthetics.

Self Care Theme

This is such a broad theme to explore, but let me share with you my own take.

The first time I used it, it was all about different things that I enjoy doing for self-care. As you can see, it had makeup, journaling, skincare, and gym doodles. Each represents different activities I enjoy to relax.

The second time I went for such a theme, I concentrated more on one specific activity – meditation!

And this became an inspiration for the entire theme, which was created after the style of the meditation app I was using at the time.

Yes, inspiration for your Bullet Journal theme can come from anywhere, including an app you’re using on your phone.

Boy, looking back at this page, I’m missing this journal so much! I had to make another pretty urgent move to another continent, so I had to leave so many of my journals behind. It absolutely breaks my heart!

Food Bullet Journal Theme

Food you enjoy can be just another type of theme idea to try in your journal. And because this is such a broad one, you can really get creative with how you would interpret it!

The first time I tried it, I made this cute sushi theme, and to make it more special, I also animated all the doodles. I think it. makes it so much cuter!

The second time I did a food theme was in April 2024, and I’ll be honest with you, I was very, very lazy at that point in time, preparing myself for another big move.

So this time, my doodles are much smaller and simpler, but I think I managed to add some creativity with the font that I used for the name of the month.

The next time I did a food-based theme was in 2025, when I did this cute setup based on Japanese desserts.

I really was quite obsessed with mochi, and they are so easy to doodle! Add so it has an aesthetic color palette, and you have yourself a beautiful monthly theme!

In case you’re wondering, for the colors here I used my Crayola Super Tips – they are great markers, pretty affordable, and come in so many different colors! You can create a color palette for any theme and aesthetic.

Game Theme Ideas

Your favorite games can be an incredible inspiration for a Bullet Journal theme, and it doesn’t matter what kind of game it is. I actually have three examples here that cover three different game types.

First up in my Animal Crossing theme. Just like the rest of the world in 2020, I found a lot of calm and solace in playing Animal Crossing, so I brought this joy to my Bullet Journal as well.

Isn’t it kind of funny – I spend hundreds of hours on this game. And now the island is dead, and so is the interest in it. My villagers are sad, and every time I open the game, I need to remind myself of the controls.

Can anyone else relate? let me know in the comments!

But moving on to the second inspiration for a game theme – Among Us. It was a huge hit for a few months, and while we were all playing, I used this theme to create a quick monthly setup.

The final monthly theme based on games is about tabletop games, Dungeons and Dragons specifically.

I love playing DnD and I was playing a lot after I found a group in Lisbon, so January that year was all about my joy of having adventures with an incredible group of people.

I also want to note that, because I was quite lazy, I kept it simple. Instead of pursuing elaborate, beautiful illustrations, my whole theme centered on dice, which is much easier to doodle.

That’s another example: you can pick any theme and choose how complex or simple you want it to be.

Books Bullet Journal Theme

Books are such a wide topic, and that is where the fun begins – you can get so creative with how you approach this theme.

I’ll show you several examples of how I handle it.

First of all, here is a general book theme, where my entire month was basically just bookshelves. The only interesting thing I did was that on every page in the setup, I added something small for different types of books, such as a dragon egg added for A Song Of Ice And Fire or a bee picture for the Discworld books.

The theme became kind of like a little puzzle.

The other way to create a book theme is by following an actual book you like and building a theme around it.

I only did it once with Harry Potter books, and here is the cover page.

Holiday Bullet Journal Theme Ideas

Another but inspirations you can take for your Bullet Journal comes from holidays, and we have so many, and even more if you open up holidays from other cultures as well.

I am pretty basic with my holiday themes, so let’s start with a few cover pages from my favorite holiday – Halloween.

The first one is a pretty traditional style Halloween theme with all the basics and well-known symbols for the holiday.

The next page is when I went for something a bit different, a bit more about witches and nature magic.

I thought itwould be an interesting take and a different approach from the black and white or orange colors I used for October before.

Another big holiday in my calendar, at least, is Christmas, so of course, it makes it a perfect theme to explore in December.

To be honest, I don’t usually do any big themes that month. I find that it’s often the time of the year when I am super busy and overwhelmed with things, so I try not to make it extra complicated for myself.

But here is an example of a Christmas theme I tried back in the day. The theme for that monthly setup was Christmas movies, and Gremlins 2 is probably my favorite movie to watch during the holiday season.

Birthday Theme

Birthdays, we all have them. So when it is your birthday month, why not make it a special one by adding some cheer to your Bullet Journal pages?

Since my birthday is in June, here is my take on a birthday theme for June 2024.

Makeup Bullet Journal Theme

I like the idea of turning things that you like and enjoy into a theme in your Bullet Journal, and that is why in June I used make-up as a monthly theme.

I really think it’s a wonderful theme. There are so many different colors, shapes, and doodles you can create around this theme!

Pegboard Theme

I love this theme so much that it confuses me how I only used it once in my Bullet Journal.

It is a fun way to explore more of your stationery doodles and maybe your dreams for that perfect organised office (guilty!).

I think adding those pegboard klines on the back makes the layout stand out and look more put-together.

Actually, as I’m writing this post, I remember that this was the theme for one of the printable monthly setups you can get from my shop – May 2023 Bullet Journal Setup.

I actually did end up printing it up and adding to my own journal as well, so I have a photo to share with you for inspiration.

Minimalist Bullet Journal Theme

As much as I love colors, I can’t deny that minimalism has its own appeal. Plus, minimalist Bullet Journal pages are usually faster to create, and sometimes this is exactly what you need.

Minimalism for me is usually in the months when I don’t have time to do a proper monthly setup, and I want something neutral and quick.

Let’s start with this May cover page. The entire theme is mostly black and white, but I thought it wouldn’t hurt to have a few color accents, especially since drawing circles is pretty easy.

If you actually want to draw perfect circles and not the wonky kind, I recommend you get a Helix Circle Maker – it is a perfect tool for any circle elements in your journal.

And the next time I went for something minimalist was in January. The whole thing was based around black with little gold accents.

And if you’re looking for a good golden gel pen, there is nothing better than Sakura Gelly Roll!

Baking Bullet Journal Theme

As I keep repeating – anything can be a theme for your BuJo, including any of your hobbies or other activities you enjoy. Or maybe something you wish you could do.

The latter is what baking theme was for me – I wish I could bake, but somehow that skill keeps eluding me. However, I like the cute baking supplies, so I used them all to create a full monthly theme.

Photography Theme

Photography is a fun theme to explore! You can take a lot of pictures with cameras, or you can go with Polaroid pictures. It all depends on how you want to do it.

Plus, you can always put it together with something else, as my own first take of a photography theme that has it mixed together with florals.

The next time I did a photography theme, it was much easier. I just went with little polaroids.

The cover page for this theme is very basic, so instead, here are the trackers – they represent much better what kind of style I used for this monthly setup.

Summer Bullet Journal Theme

I think seasons can be a great inspiration for your monthly theme, especially if where you’re at, you have very clear seasonal changes.

Or maybe even if you don’t, you can still dream about snowy winters or summers by the beach.

And speaking of, beach and summer were my theme for June. I wanted something simple, so I went for very easy illustrations of beach umbrellas and beach towels.

Fall Bullet Journal Theme

Fall is definitely one of my favorite seasons, mostly because it finally stops being scorching hot, but it’s not too cold, so I get to take out all my cute Fall fashion items!

But even apart from that, Fall is a beautiful and rich season, and there is plenty of inspiration to take from it. This was a cover page I created for September that was all about Fall and harvest.

For this, I used an Archer & Olive kit club, which is a kit that has all the possible supplies you need for creating an entire monthly theme with no effort.
