Before we discuss the stationery recommendations, it’s important to note that you do not need to buy all the supplies.
I’ve been there. I spent way too much money buying supplies, and let me tell you—it’s all about getting the right supplies, not about getting everything you see online.
And most importantly, you don’t actually have to get many supplies to start a Bullet Journal. In fact, you can start your Bullet Journal with any journal and any pen you can find. All the other stationery you see is a pleasant addition rather than a necessity.

How To Choose Your Stationery For Journaling
As I mentioned above, it’s pretty important that you choose the right supplies for you. I know I dove into the stationery world without thinking, and I ended up spending money and time buying things I never used.
I don’t want you to have such experiences, so I thought I’d share a few tips on how to choose the supplies you’ll love using.
- Determine your budget
First things first, you need to have an idea of how much money you can spend on stationery. Yes, a lot of high-end pens are expensive, but there are plenty of cheaper alternatives that would do the trick just as well.
- Find your journaling style
The supplies you’ll be using will depend on the style you’ll be trying out. Do you want to go with scrapbook collage style with kraft paper and washit apes? Are you planning to do a lot of brush lettering? Are you going for something colorful or minimalist?
I recommend you consider that before committing to a huge stationery haul. I know I bought tons of washi tapes when I started; they are so pretty I couldn’t resist. But it turns out they do not fit my style at all, and I barely used any of my washi tape rolls.
- Have a tryout
Before committing to a certain type of stationery, get one and try it out. One roll of wawhi tape or one brush pen. Using it will help you understand if it’s something that you like using and that fits you, so you can make a better decision on whether these are the kind of supplies you want.
- Read through recommendations
Finally, use the vast knowledge the internet provides you to make good decisions for your stationery collection. Don’t just get what people say you should; read through the recommendations and see if they fit your journaling style.

Best Stationery For Bullet Journaling
There are so many amazing supplies out there, but I tried to limit it to 17 items to make it less overwhelming.
That said, I still gathered different types of supplies, so whether you're looking for a new journal or a new colorful pen, I've got you covered!
I think the most important thing to get right is a journal. If you get a high-quality journal with good paper, even cheaper pens won't damage it. And considering it's a canvas for your life and creativity, I think it's worth getting a better one.
You can definitely get away with a 120 GSM paper, but I recommend 160 GSM. It can withstand much more, and you'll never have issues with bleeding and ghosting.

Bullet Journaling is a lot about writing, so obviously, getting a good writing pen you like is a must. Muji pens are some of the best on the market, with their smooth ink flow and aesthetic design.
The lines they create are thin and elegant, so if it fits your handwriting style - go for it,
Another fantastic option for a good writing pen is these Pilot G2 pens, and as you can see, they also come in many different colors. They help you have thicker lines, so for certain handwriting styles, they are actually better.
Pencil is a great trick to help you avoid mistakes in your journal. Whether you add doodles or just sketch the placement of your daily boxes, do it in pencil first.
With that, a pencil easily becomes something you use pretty often, so having a comfortable pencil is a must. This particular mechanical pencil has the most comfortable grip I've ever had.
These pens are perfect for adding brush lettering to your pages, especially for smaller elements like your daily headers. They are also great for drawing and doodling if that's what you like doing in your journal.
These are actually the best pens to start your brush lettering journey as well, so if you're thinking of learning, get these.
These fineliners are smooth and have archival ink, meaning that they will keep their dark black ink color for a long long time. Fineliners are generally the blood of your Bullet Journal; they are the go-to pens when it comes to drawing, doodling, or just designing your pages.
This set comes with pens with different nib sizes, so you get an extra variety of line thicknesses.
If you want fineliners but in many different colors - these are for you. There are 60 different colors available, so they are perfect for creating those bright and colorful pages.
These highlighters are my favorite pens of all time. They have dual tips, one a highlighter and one is a marker. They come in many beautiful colors, and they last for a pretty long time.
They are great for studying notes or for color coding your entries. But I also generally use them to add color to my pages with the marker tip.
For fans of gel pens, these are some of the best—and trust me, I've tried a lot! They come in so many other different colors, are super smooth, and look particularly stunning on black paper.
They have metallic colors as well, but the white one is the true star, since it's the best way to hide little mistakes in your Bullet Journal.
Crayola Super Tips are the true stars of the stationery world! They are pretty affordable and come in 100 colors! And they can be used in so many ways - as markers, as highlighters, and you can even do brush lettering with them!
If you want to dive into the world of brush pens, Tombow Dual Brush is a great start. They come in more than 100 colors, and each pen has a brush tin and marker tip.
Even before I started doing brush lettering, I already started buying these pens just for the beautiful color they added to my Bullet Journal pages!
These pens are my new obsession - they are smooth and come in many different colors. They have a medium tip and there are many fun ways to use them. For me, it's mostly about creating colorful fonts and headers.
Stencils are a fantastic way to speed up the process of creating your Bullet Journal pages. There are stencils for everything, from functional to quickly setting up a weekly spread to decorative for adding pretty fonts to your headers.

I know I mentioned before that for a very long time, washi tape wasn't actually what I used in my journal, but in case it's your cup of tea, I recommend you check out this site.
They have what seems like a limitless number of different sizes and washi tape designs, so you'll definitely be able to find something that fits your needs and aesthetics.
A grid guide is probably the best investment you can make in your journaling. It allows you to easily have all the measurements ready, so next time you sit down to create a weekly spread, you already know exactly where to divide it into equal parts.
Last but not least is this humble little ruler. If you like to create any circle element in your Bulelt Journal, this ruler is your savior. I've been using it myself, and it really helps to finally have proper circles on your pages, not the wobbly ones I usually end up with.
