Let’s explore how these unique approaches can transform your monthly planning into something that helps you plan and you’re excited to look at every day.

A monthly log, often referred to as a “monthly,” is one of the core spreads in Bullet Journaling. Its primary purpose is to provide a concise overview of your month, including events, appointments, deadlines, and tasks.
This spread acts as a central hub for your monthly planning, helping you stay organized and ensuring you don’t overlook important dates. The monthly log is incredibly useful for tracking what’s ahead and identifying when you have free time to take on additional responsibilities or activities.
What makes the monthly log so versatile is its adaptability. You can design it to suit your specific needs, whether you prefer a minimalist approach or a more decorative, artistic style.
And there are also different formats and approaches to a monthly log. In this post, I’ll give you plenty of inspiration for all types I can think of, so you can find here something that fits your planning needs and your aesthetics.

Stationery Recommendations
First, a few words on some supplies that are useful for creating a monthly log page, as well as any other pages in your Bullet Journal.
- Fineliners. Fineliners are the basis of any doodles or drawings you will make, so make sure to get a few, preferably with different tip sizes. Among my favorite fineliners are Sakura Pigma Micron and Staedtler Pigment Liner.
- Markers. You probably will want to add some color. I would offer to get some brush pens, like Tombow Dual Brush Pens or Sakura Koi Brush Pens. I also absolutely adore Zebra Mildliner Highlighters, they have two different tips, and their colors are so so pretty! For a bit more budget options, definitely check out Crayola Super Tips Markers, they are great, and you can use them for lettering as well as coloring.
Ok, with supplies at the ready, let’s look at those monthly spreads and pick your style and format that works for you!
Bullet Journal Monthly Spread Ideas
There are plenty of different monthly spread ideas, and here I gathered inspirations from different creators so you can see all the various ways you can decorate your layouts.
More than that, there are also a lot of different formats, so I divided this post into parts to give you ideas for every different format.
Let's dive in!
Monthly Calendar
Let's start from a popular format and one of my favorite ones - a full-on calendar view. Since I was a kid, this is how I saw the month, so this format is the most intuitive and easy to understand.
To have a full-on calendar view of your month, it's useful to put two pages into it. That way, you can have a clear view and you have enough space for everyday and any other extra elements you need in your monthly log.
I also like using different colors for the weekend, just so I have a clear separation visually.
I love how structured and organised this monthly log is, including separate sections for a to-do list for each week of the month. And the header looks absolutely fantastic.
A two-page format gives you more space, but sometimes one page is enough, especially if you have a larger journal like this one.
This monthly log looks so beautiful and I love how many things the creator manages to include in this one layout - monthly log, monthly goals, notes, a quote, and so many decorative elements!
I love how this layout looks good while using minimal amounts of colors and decorations. Just using shades of brown to create a certain atmosphere and keep it all classy.
Vertical Monthly Log
A vertical month,y log is the one that is the easiest to set up, and this is actually the classic Bullet Journal format. Since the whole idea of the system is to have something that you can easily set up and start using right away, this format is perfect for times when you just need to get started.
There are a few tricks I love using in my vertical monthly log. First of all, mark the weekend with separate colors, secondly, mark every other line with a grey color so I can easily see which lines are which day.
More than that, I love adding the log in the middle of the page so I can add personal stuff on one side and work-related tasks on the other side.
But just because you have a vertical monthly log doesn't mean you can't decorate it if you want to. This incredible monthly log is mostly a stunning illustration, and it looks incredible while also serving its function.
If you're looking for the fastest way to set up and the way that was part of the original Bullet journal system, this is the prime example of that. You can set it up in less than a minute.
Mini Calendar Monthly Log
This is another format I tried before, where you have a smaller monthly calendar and you write all the events and deadlines under it.
It's faster to set up than a full-on calendar monthly log, but it still gives you a calendar view of the entire month.
A little trick I love using with this format is to add color coding. to the monthly calendar so I always know something is happening on that day, and then I can looky I have planned.
As much as I love colors, I can't deny that just doing a layout in black and white can look absolutely stunning, just check out this beautiful monthly log! And using one pen definitely cuts down on how much time you spend setting it up.
This format also allows you to add any other elements to your layout, especially if you have a less busy month with not so many things happening.
Horizontal Monthly Log
This is a vertical log but in a horizontal format. This style allows you to use two pages and have plenty of space to add any type of decorations you want to it.
I love how colorful and creative this monthly log looks. This creator also added a little calendar view of the month to the corner for convenience.
I feel like this is an illustration with a monthly log element rather than a decorated monthly log, but I love it. The artwork here is incredible! And there is still enough space for any deadlines and appointments you have during the month.
If you cut off on decorations for a bit, you can actually add a lot of other elements to this monthly log format. After all, it's two pages, so there is a lot of space.
Circle Monthly Log
Last but not least is a circle monthly log format. As with all circular elements, it takes a bit of special effort to set it up, but it definitely looks very stylish and different.
This layout looks incredible, and it's one more proof of how much you can do with just one black pen! And I like how the creator added a little mood doodle to each entry.
The last one on the list is this little circle monthly log I created. It's an example of how you can fit this format on just one page if you don't need much space for planning.
