What Is Doodling And Why You Should Start

Doodling is an incredibly enjoyable and stress-relieving hobby to pick up, and the great thing about it is that anyone can get started!

Yup, you don’t have to be born with a special talent to doodle. Even if you’ve never drawn anything in your life – you can pick up that pen and start doodling right now.

In two words, doodling is just taking a pen to paper and putting there your emotions, things around you, or just picture demonstrations of your thoughts.

Doodling, of course, is a great way to decorate your Bullet Journal. But with some practice and patience, doodling can also become your form of meditation and stress release.

It’s a great way to express yourself and your creativity that can also help improve your mental health and even problem-solve. With doodling being an art form easily available for everyone, why wouldn’t you give it a try?

I hope I convinced you to give it a try and rip the benefits, but if not, you can always check my post on 7 Incredible Benefits Of Doodling.

Best Pens For Doodling

Before you actually sit down to doodle, we have to talk about stationery.

You don’t really need anything special, but if you want to – here are my recommendations:

  • Smooth paper. If you’re planning to color your doodles, you’ll want a smooth paper like this, or your markers will fray.
  • Pen and pencil. The basics you’ll need to start doodling. My best tip is to get a pencil with a comfortable grip, like this one.
  • Fineliners. They are the best pens for doodling and usually come with different size tips, so you can easily elevate your doodles. I recommend these.
  • Markers, if you want to add color to your doodles. You’ll see me almost always using these pens for my doodles.

How To Start Doodling

To get started doodling, you don’t need any special supplies; all you need is a pencil and paper. Once you have these two items in hand, it’s time to start doodling!

First, find a comfortable spot where you won’t be disturbed. This could be your bedroom or the corner of your living room – wherever you feel most relaxed.

Take a few deep breaths to help clear your mind and then begin by sketching simple shapes such as circles, triangles, squares, or rectangles.

As you continue sketching these shapes, try experimenting with patterns or designs by adding extra lines and curves that are unique to your drawing.

You can also add splashes of color by using markers or colored pencils if desired.

This will help you get comfortable with the idea of doodling and will make it so much easier for you when you sit down with the intention of doodling something in particular. Look at this as a warm-up.

When starting out, it’s important not to put too much pressure on yourself; simply draw what comes naturally, and don’t worry about making mistakes!

Once you allow yourself some mindless doodling and hopefully feel more confident – here is your next step.

How To Improve Your Doodling Skills

Following tutorials and keep on practicing is the best way to get better, but there are a few more golden nuggets I wanted to share with you.

If you want to get better and not abandon this new hobby in a month, here are some of the best tips:

  • Practice every day. This will help you to become more familiar with the basics of drawing and get more comfortable with sketching different objects and scenes.
  • Have a sketchbook or journal. It’s a great idea to use a journal rather than random pieces of paper because it will help you to track your progress as you can look back at what you’ve done in the past and see how much improvement you’ve made.
  • Draw what or how you like. It’s your doodles; you do it your own way. Don’t be afraid to explore beyond a single style and try out different techniques.
  • Compare only to yourself. It’s easy to go on social media, see all the artists creating amazing doodle artworks, and get discouraged. Don’t do that! You don’t know their background and how much work they put into it. Only compare your today with you a month ago.
  • Don’t forget to have fun! Drawing should be an enjoyable process, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Be creative, be fearless, and keep practicing – soon enough, those doodles will turn into masterpieces.

With all this information, you should be ready to start doodling right away.
