Stationery Recommendations
Before you sit down in your home office or at the dining table to plan for January, you’ll need to get your supplies. And in this world, there are too many to choose from.
So, to keep it simple, here are some of my favorite supplies that I think you’ll love using in your Bullet Journal as well.
- A journal. Of course, you can’t plan without a journal, and there are many options. My top choices are Archer and Olive journals (you can get 10% off with my code MASHA10), but there are plenty of more affordable options as well, such as Lemome Dotted Bullet Notebook.
- Fineliners. These pens are the blood of your every page! Beyond smooth ink flow and rich black lines, they also come in sets with different nib sizes, so you can add more variety. My top choice is Sakura Pigma Micron pens.
- Markers. If you like adding color to your journal, you’ll need some markers! I always recommend Crayola Super Tips, since they come in many colors and are pretty affordable. You can also use them for brush lettering!
- Tombow Fude brush pen. This pen is your go-to friend for creating beautiful headers, brush lettering, doodling, and drawing. The small, easy-to-control brush tip makes it perfect for beginners.
- Washi tapes. In case you’re looking for an easy way to decorate your Bullet Journal, washi tape is the way to go! Washi tape comes in all kinds of themes and colors, so you can find something that fits your aesthetic.

January Bullet Journal Theme Ideas
Your options for January Bullet Journal themes are as vast as your imagination, so technically, this list could go on forever!
But to keep things manageable (and not overwhelm you with endless options), I’ve narrowed it down to 17 stellar ideas, many of which are my own personal takes on starting the year with something special.
So, whether you’re a Bullet Journal newbie or a seasoned pro, let’s dive into these themes together and kickstart your year with a dash of creativity and a whole lot of fun!
Watercolor Theme
Let’s start with a classic yet stylish idea – watercolor. Now, don’t let the word ‘watercolor’ intimidate you; it’s much simpler than you might think. Plus, it offers a fantastic way to dabble in creativity without needing to be Picasso!
This theme’s beauty lies in its flexibility. You can choose your favorite hues, mix and match color combinations, or experiment with different techniques. It’s all about creating a vibrant, personalized canvas that breathes life into your Bullet Journal.
Colorful Bullet Journal Theme
Here is my own take on a January theme. I often get too busy to get extra creative for my January setup, so I’m looking for something fun and colorful but still quick to create.
This theme is all about color, and all I really need is washi tape for those straight lines and my favorite Zebra Mildliners. A little trick: stick washi tape on and off your hand first so the glue isn’t too strong and it lifts off your page easily once you finish coloring.
Champagne Bullet Journal Theme
As we usher in a brand new year, it’s only fitting to kick off with a celebratory theme for your Bullet Journal. How about a toast to new beginnings with a champagne theme?
Like the fizzy bubbles in a champagne flute, this theme captures joy, celebration, and anticipation for the amazing things ahead. Play around with gold, black, white, and silver elements to capture the elegance and decadence of a champagne party.
Floral Theme
Next on our list is a theme that never goes out of style – flowers. This classic theme is a favorite in the Bullet Journal community, and for good reason! Flowers can represent growth, beauty, and the blossoming of new ideas, perfect for starting a fresh year.

As we embark on the grand adventure that is 2024, what better way to reflect this in your Bullet Journal than with a travel theme?
This theme is so much fun, with all sorts of travel doodles, airplanes, suitcases, maps- you name it! It’s like setting off on a world tour right from the comfort of my cozy reading nook.
And let me tell you, there’s something incredibly exciting about watching your Bullet Journal transform into a vibrant travelogue. It’s a visual reminder that life is an adventure, and we’re all explorers charting our own course.
DnD Bullet Journal Theme
I find inspiration for my Bullet journal themes all over the place, and that particular January I was inspired by the DnD sessions we’ve been having with my friends.
I found it a pretty difficult theme, and it took me a while to figure out how to bring it to life; eventually, I decided on drawing dice and little knickknacks characters in the game would have, like a wizard hat and a potion.
Fireworks Bullet Journal Theme
I think it is pretty universal that a New Year celebration includes fireworks. When I was a kid, we used to go to a boulevard with my dad to launch fireworks, and we’d watch the amazing ones the neighbors launched.
Nowadays, it’s mostly fireworks organized by the government, which is much safer and better for the environment.
But I digress; fireworks are a fun and fitting theme for January, and you get to play so much with what kind of colors you are using. I love how this creator, in particular, chose such bright, happy colors.
Lunar Calendar Theme
Well, here’s a theme that truly caught my eye – let’s just call it the ‘Lunar Calendar’ theme. Now, I don’t think the creator actually named it that way, but to me, it screams lunar calendar, especially considering the Lunar New Year often falls in January.
Now, if you’re someone who loves to play around with themes that are a bit unique and offer a sense of calm, this Lunar Calendar theme might just be perfect for you. Plus, it aligns beautifully with the beginning of the year, marking new beginnings and fresh starts.
Architecture Bullet Journal Theme
I stumbled upon this theme during one of my Bullet Journal explorations, and boy, was I stunned! The intricate architectural doodles were nothing short of perfection.
Now, some might think, “Just one black pen? How stunning can that be?” But looking at this cover page, you realize how much beauty you can create with minimal tools. It’s all about the artist’s skill, vision, and creative flair.
The creator of this theme has truly outdone themselves. I can only imagine how breathtaking the rest of their monthly setup must be.
Ice Cream Theme
Why not try an ‘Ice Cream’ theme for your Bullet Journal? It might sound a little unconventional, especially if you’re snuggled up by the fireplace right now, but hear me out.
Imagine doodling delicious ice cream cones, vibrant popsicles, and maybe even a sundae or two across your pages. You could play around with different flavors and colors, adding a touch of whimsy to your daily planning. Plus, it’s a fun way to pay homage to our friends who are enjoying their summer right now.
Minimalist Theme
As I said a few times already. January is often a simple month for me, so here’s inspiration for a minimalist theme, all about black-and-white, practical layouts with no real decorations.
The only fun thing I added here is little gold pen accents, and if you want my recommendation, I will always tell you to use Sakura Gelly Roll metallic pen for this.
Desktop Theme
The artist behind this theme has truly worked their magic. They’ve transformed what might seem like a mundane concept, a desktop, into a theme that’s both fun and adorable. It’s like they’ve taken the essence of a lively workspace, sprinkled in some creativity, and voila! The result is a theme that’s quirky, engaging, and oh-so-unique.
And, of course, this theme gives you plenty of room to create, since you can play around with the colors you want to use or the icons you want on your laptop.
Coffee Bullet Journal Theme
There’s something incredibly comforting and serene about cozy themes, isn’t there? When it comes to coziness, few things rival the welcoming vibe of a coffee theme. It’s the perfect pick for the chill of January, offering warmth as comforting as a hot cup of joe on a cold day.
Stick to earthy browns and soft neutrals to capture the essence of a snug, cozy coffee shop, like the beautiful cover page I stumbled upon recently. The artist has done a fantastic job of creating a soothing, homely vibe that makes you want to curl up with your Bullet Journal and a steaming mug of coffee.
But if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, why not take a different route? Shake things up with bright, vibrant colors that echo the lively buzz of a bustling coffee shop. Think bold reds, sunny yellows, or even rich purples – the choice is entirely yours!
My Favorite Things Theme
Isn’t it wonderful when you can combine two of your passions into one activity? That’s exactly what I did for my January theme in my Bullet Journal – “My Favorite Things”. It was an opportunity, a delightful excuse, to doodle all the things I love!
I found this idea incredibly liberating because it let my creativity run wild.
But here’s the best part: your “My Favorite Things” theme will undoubtedly look completely different from mine. Why? Because we’re all unique individuals with our own set of favorite things! Your journal could feature your favorite songs, your beloved pets, or even snapshots of cherished travel memories. The sky’s the limit!
Yellow Duckie Theme
Remember when I said literally anything can be a theme for your journal? Well, here’s a prime example.
Are you fond of yellow rubber duckies? Maybe it’s their bright, cheerful color, or perhaps the nostalgic memories they bring back from your childhood baths. Whatever the reason, you find them utterly delightful. Well, guess what? You can absolutely turn this adoration into a theme for your Bullet Journal!
Bullet Journaling’s beauty lies in its flexibility. It’s all about expressing yourself and making your journal a real reflection of who you are. And if yellow rubber duckies bring you joy, then why not let them splash their way onto your pages?
Cacti Bullet Journal Theme
I couldn’t help but include this theme because of its vibrant, stunning nature. Sure, a cacti theme might seem a little out of the ordinary for the winter months, but remember, your Bullet Journal is your personal domain – there are no hard and fast rules here. Choose any theme that resonates with you.
It’s bright, it’s beautiful, and it adds a dash of unexpected warmth to the chilly winter months. Plus, it’s a great way to break away from traditional winter themes and try something a little different.
Black And White Bullet Journal Theme
I am absolutely enamored with this new theme – the striking contrast of black and white, accentuated by neat origami doodles. This monochromatic theme’s simplicity and elegance are such a visual treat.
